News / Tall ships return to Szczecin!

03.06.2024

After seven years, the majestic tall ships are sailing back to Szczecin. From August 2nd to 5th, at the foot of the Chrobry Embankment (Wały Chrobrego), on Łasztownia, and, above all, on the water, the final of the Tall Ships Race will take place. The City of Szczecin presents the programme of the event.

The artistic programme and musical stars always attract as much attention as the world-famous sailing ships. Visitors are eager to attend the concerts and have fun in front of the stage. From August 2nd to 5th, there will be three music stages at different locations, each offering a variety of sounds.

On land

On Łasztownia, near The Food Port, we will set up a local stage with artists from Szczecin. The second stage will be moored at the Gdynia Boulvard (Bulwar Gdyński) near the Customs Office. This is where you can enjoy authentic shanties intermingled with Celtic music, romantic ballads and folk tunes. Performers will include Szczecin-based bands such as: Dair, After Blues, Zemsta Królowej Anny, Ryczące Dwudziestki, Chango, as well as guests from various regions of Poland: Klang, The Nierobbers, Chór Zawiszy, Flasch Creep, Cheap Tabaco, Wikingowie, Perły i Łotry, Kraków Street Band, Banana Boat.

On Jana z Kolna Street, the main stage will host concerts by the biggest Polish stars over three days. Friday kicks off with a special concert by the Maritime University Choir, conducted by Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch, with special guests. On Saturday we invite you to a disco under the sails, featuring pop stars like Lanberry, Tribbs, Daria Marx, and Sylwia Grzeszczak, with the night ending to the beats of DJ Radio Eska. On Sunday, we will be able to listen to top rock, pop, electronic and alternative artists. Krzysztof Zalewski, Mery Spolsky, Smolik/Kev Fox, and Ikarus Feel will perform on The Tall Ships stage. All music concerts as part of The Tall Ships Races final will be free of charge.

On the water

The true stars of the August weekend are undoubtedly the tall ships. Even vessels not participating in the actual race have been invited, ensuring that the quays along the Oder River will be filled to the brim. From August 2nd to 5th, around 65 ships are expected to dock at the wharves of Szczecin. These will include international Class A, B, C, and D vessels from Denmark, Norway, Lithuania, Sweden, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Among them will be those already familiar to Szczecin residents, as well as new guests making their first appearance in the capital of West Pomerania. One such newcomer will be the Ecuadorian ship Guayas, a bark measuring nearly 79 meters in length! Another exotic guest is the well-known Brazilian White Swan, the tall ship Cisne Branco. Among the foreign vessels is also the German tall ship Grossherzogin Elisabeth. There will also be Polish representatives, such as the largest Polish training ship, Dar Młodzieży, and the flagship of the Polish Yachting Association, Kapitan Głowacki.

Traditionally, all the sailing ships moored at Szczecin’s quays open their decks to residents and tourists. Exploring the decks offers a glimpse into life at sea. Meet the crew, take photos and enjoy unique views – all possible during the final of The Tall Ships Races. Children accompanied by their guardians, as well as people with disabilities, will be able to tour the decks if safety conditions permit (depending on the width of the gangway and the docking location).

A sea of attractions for all

An integral part of the final of The Tall Ships Races are the additional attractions and play areas. From August 2nd to 5th, the two banks of the Oder River will be filled with opportunities for active and creative leisure. Two pontoon bridges linking the right and left banks of the river will appear on the Oder, making it easier and quicker to get around.

Children's zones will be waiting for the youngest visitors – the largest of which will be located on the Adam Mickiewicz Square, where various animations, workshops, large-scale games, concerts, dance shows, and sports activities with sailing elements will take place. There will also be an interactive exhibition titled WELLBEING, presenting the activities of cultural institutions and educational facilities. Another children's zone will be located on Łasztownia at The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Square, where sports workshops, creative activities, and much more will be prepared in cooperation with animators and trainers. Next to the zone on Łasztownia, there will also be a funfair, and not the only one. For residents and tourists visiting Szczecin for the final, two colourful amusement parks will be set up on both sides of the Oder. Here, visitors will be able to indulge in great fun and a bit of madness.

As for other stationary attractions that will be present during the final, the well-known and popular stalls of The Sailor's Market, located both on the Chrobry Embankment and on Łasztownia, will be among them. The Sailor's Market also include the unique Artists' Alley, which for years has attracted creators eager to showcase their works and talents, creating exceptional handmade products.

Those who get hungry can seek solace in the food truck zone. The rally of ‘gastronomy on wheels’ from all over Poland is a perfect opportunity to taste interesting dishes in the unusual settings of beautiful sailing ships. The food truck zones will be located both on Łasztownia and the Chrobry Embankment. Throughout the event area, there will be about eight beer taverns serving not only traditional pilsners, but also flavoured and refreshing non-alcoholic beers.

One day is definitely not enough to enjoy all the attractions being prepared for the final of The Tall Ships Races in Szczecin. It is worth reserving this time in advance. The Crew Parade is certainly not to be missed. This international, colourful parade will march through the streets of Szczecin from the Chrobry Embankment to the Helena Majdaniec Summer Theatre. It will feature music, dancing, and artistic performances. This is how the crews will introduce themselves to the residents and tourists, creating a unique, joyful, sailing atmosphere that will spread throughout the city! This is one of the elements of The Tall Ships Races final that makes for an incredible experience, and anyone who has participated in this extraordinary event will remember it with a smile.

Another must-see is the 7th Szczecin Brass Band Festival 2024 for the Szczecin President’s Cup. Eight brass bands have entered the competition, and together they will play the Szczecin bugle call, and march through  the streets and along the boulevards of the city.
